RETURNING TO LOVE
You do not need to try harder, force desire, or become more available at your own expense. You need a process that understands what your body is doing and helps you create more safety, agency, and choice inside closeness.
Built on the Intimacy Response™ Method.

You love him.
You want the marriage.
You may have built a beautiful life together.
And yet:
When he reaches for you, something tightens.
You participate, but you are not fully there.
Affection feels loaded because you do not know what will be expected next.
You feel responsible for his disappointment and disconnected from your own experience.
You miss wanting intimacy while also feeling relieved when it is off the table.
This is not a contradiction I need to talk you out of.
It is the exact pattern Returning to Love was created to address.

Progress is personal, and no specific outcome can be guaranteed.
Women often enter this work wanting a better sex life, but the first meaningful shifts may happen before sex.
You notice your body tightening before you completely shut down.
Affection can remain affection without automatically becoming a decision about sex.
You can express a boundary without disappearing or managing his entire response.
You can stay more present during a vulnerable conversation.
You feel more able to receive touch when it is genuinely welcome.
You can tell the difference between protection, pressure, pain, and an authentic no.
Closeness begins to include more choice and less obligation.
WHAT WE WORK ON

You identify your primary protection patterns and learn to recognize the moment your body begins to brace, manage, disappear, or get ahead of intimacy.
You practice remaining connected to yourself during manageable moments of closeness. You develop more room between the first signal of activation and the response that usually takes over.
You work with the actual cues that activate shutdown: anticipation, affection, vulnerability, requests, expectations, receiving, and the fear that one moment determines the rest of the evening.
You bring new responses into the marriage through clearer boundaries, repair, receiving, co-regulation, and intimacy that allows you to stay connected to yourself.
This is not about trying harder or forcing desire.
We're not retraining how you feel about touch.
And we're not asking you to push through discomfort until touch becomes easier.
We're changing what your body automatically does when intimacy registers as a threat even though you're with a safe partner.
There is no touch-based work inside Returning to Love.
You won't be asked to have sex when you don't want to, tolerate something activating, or prove that you're making progress by doing more physically.
The work starts before that.
Because when your body no longer has to protect you from intimacy, closeness doesn't require the same amount of managing in the first place.

WHY GROUP WORK
Intimacy Shutdown often carries deep privacy and shame.
A carefully held group can reduce the feeling that you are the only woman experiencing it while allowing you to learn without turning each session into open personal processing.
The cohort is intentionally structured. Participation is invited, not performed. You can protect your privacy and still engage with the work.
You are currently in a committed relationship or marriage.
You love your partner and want the relationship.
Your body tightens, pulls away, numbs, distracts, or goes quiet around closeness.
You are emotionally stable enough to participate in a group educational and coaching process.
You are willing to practice between sessions and approach change without forcing yourself.
Women in an abusive, coercive, or currently unsafe relationship
Women seeking crisis care or treatment for acute mental-health symptoms
Women who need individualized trauma processing as their primary support
Women who are actively separating or unsure whether they want to remain in the relationship
Anyone looking for a way to override pain, a genuine no, or the need for medical evaluation

I’m Carrie Cohen, a psychotherapist with more than 25 years of clinical experience.
My work integrates nervous-system science, attachment theory, and relational work.
I also spent approximately ten years experiencing Intimacy Shutdown in my own marriage and have now spent approximately twelve years on the other side of that pattern with the same husband.
Returning to Love is the program I created for women who do not want to leave their marriages - and do not want to keep leaving themselves inside intimacy.

She told me her biggest win wasn't sex, it was cuddling. For years, she couldn't curl up next to her husband without bracing for what might come next. Cuddling, always carried pressure, so she stopped reaching for him altogether.
After doing this work, that changed. One night she leaned into him on the couch just because she wanted to. No pressure. No expectation. Just comfort and safety in his arms. She said, "I didn't realize how much I missed this until I had it back."

She told me, "All I want is to want intimacy again." For years, she went through the motions, feeling guilty that she didn't crave her husband the way she used to.
Within weeks, she noticed a shift. For the first time, she reached for him because she wanted to, not because she felt she should. That moment of genuine desire because the turning point in her marriage.

For so long, she believed feeling safe with her husband was out of reach. She loved him, but her body never let her fully trust closeness.
Inside Returning To Love, she experienced what she once thought was impossible genuine safety in his arms. She told me, "For the first time, I can breathe, relax, and just let him in." That single shift has changed everything about how the connect.

Enrollment is by application so we can determine whether the program’s format and scope fit what you need.
Returning to Love is a clinically informed educational and coaching program. It is not psychotherapy, crisis care, or a substitute for individualized medical or mental-health treatment. Participation does not create a therapist-client relationship unless separate written agreements explicitly establish one.
Many women arrive with strong insight. The program focuses on what happens when closeness is occurring: the first bodily signal, the meaning attached to it, the automatic protection that follows, and the possibility of a different response.
No ethical program can promise a particular level of desire. Returning to Love is designed to increase awareness, safety, agency, and choice around intimacy. For some women, desire becomes more available as pressure and protection change; every woman’s experience is individual.
You are not required to disclose explicit personal details to the group. The program is structured around education, guided practice, application, and integration - not pressured sharing.
Returning to Love is a program for women. You apply what you are learning inside your real relationship, but your husband does not attend the group sessions unless a specific guest component is announced.
Pain should not be pushed through. Seek evaluation from an appropriate medical or pelvic-health professional. This program can complement appropriate care but does not diagnose or treat physical conditions.
You can love your husband and still have a body that protects against intimacy.
Returning to Love gives you a place to understand that pattern without shame and begin changing how you meet closeness - without forcing yourself or abandoning what is true.
